Wireless "G" or "N" ?

Wireless Routers: There are quite a few vendors who provide wireless routers. Of these, the most popular are Linksys, Belkin, Netgear, and D-Link. Additionally, each brand of router will break out into additional technology types that many of us will need help in understanding.
To make it simple, there is the low end called “G” and the high end called “N”. The difference is mostly in the effective transmission distance and the method it uses to transmit. The “G” series is good for about 100 feet and the “N” far surpasses this to 400 feet.

Although the “G” may seem to be adequate for your use, you must understand that these distances can be altered by home construction, interference, and other equipment in the home.

One of the best reasons for choosing “N” over “G” is that the “N” series transmits and receives on multiple frequencies concurrently, where the “G” series uses only one. What this means in plain language is you are able to have a better experience listening to music and video at the same time you are working on a spreadsheet, word processor, or playing an internet game. (You can “multi-task” more efficiently).

My preference is Linksys (currently a Cisco product). Cisco has been a forerunner for many years in the corporate environment and has a very good reputation.
Most people buy the “G” series and that works just fine for them. But for the “Power User”, the choice is usually with the “N”. Some stores will give you a 14 day return policy on routers. If you buy the “G” and find that it does not meet your needs, you could always return it for a better product like the “N” series.
